1 ) How does the SUNMOBILE Solar Kit work?
Once installed, the solar panel included in SUMOBILE’S Solar Kit converts the light beaming down on it into electric power. This electricity is transferred to the cart’s battery through the provided cable. A proprietary controller assures proper charging of the batteries and also protects the batteries from overcharging. As long as the golf cart is outside, under the sun or in natural shades (also cloudy skies and rainy days), the batteries are being charged.
2 ) How is the SUNMOBILE Solar Kit different from other kits?
The first thing you’ll notice is how light the solar panel is. Glass solar panels can weigh more than 60 pounds, and our Flex Panels they weighs in around nine pounds and is less than a quarter of an inch thick. This makes the kit easy to handle and install and does not put a heavy load on your cart.
Also the glass panels (as well as other flexible panels) just don’t provide as much energy as our Flex Panels. You can expect about 30% more power.
The second major difference is in Gulf City Solar’s proprietary power management (PMS). By manipulating the energy provided by the solar panel, our (PMS) keeps your battery nearly fully charged at all times. In fact, your battery gets charged each time you stop on the course.
3 ) Will it ever wear out?
No, the SUNMOBILE Solar Kit will keep your battery charged to at least 80 percent nearly all the time; it charges the batteries during stops and it assists the motor while you’re driving . Its efficient use of energy also extends the life of your batteries, because they don’t experience the strain of being fully depleted and fully recharged. If you ever do run low, just leave the cart for a while outside and let it get charged by the sun. If you are in a real hurry, or it is late evening and you want to drive off early in the morning, just put it to the charger for a couple of hours.
4 ) Will I ever have to plug my cart into a wall socket?
Not under normal golf operation. Gulf City Solar’s regulator is designed to use energy up to 30 percent more efficiently than other golf cart solar kits. There are some extreme situations which may cause the load capacity to drop below 60 percent (the golf cart will slow down drastically). At this point the cart will need to be plugged into a charger for a while.
Some of the extreme conditions, which could be the cause are:
- If the golf cart is operated far into the night and then put inside without a chance for the sun to recharge it.
- If the golf cart is driven extensively all day in bad weather without stopping, the batteries are low, and the golf cart was put inside without a chance for the sun to recharge it.
- If the golf cart is taken out two to three days in a row and driven only for a few hours per day and then put inside without a chance for the sun to recharge it.
5 ) Is it easy to install?
Each kit contains a flexible solar panel, controller and cables. The ultra light flexible solar panel is being taped directly to the top of your golf cart and sealed with silicon. The proprietary PMS is installed at the inside of the cart with the same special double sided tape. Then just connect the thin cables attached to the controller and panel to the battery and you’re in business! Easy installation instructions are included in the kit. The installation can always be removed easily, without leaving any trace – and then it can be re-installed on the next cart.
6 ) Does the kit only work on sunny days?
No. The SUNMOBILE panel is designed to absorb white, blue and green light, so it can absorb and convert light to electricity even on cloudy days. It will also be charged a bit by florescent lighting.
7 ) What happens if the solar panel is damaged?
The SUNMOBILE solar panel can keep on working, even if a few cells are damaged. Glass panels quit if even one cell is damaged.
8 ) Will washing my cart damage or loosen the panel?
No. The SUNMOBILE solar panel is designed to be durable. The special double sided tape for attaching the panel has been extensively tested under various extreme conditions.
9 ) Do I need to use a special battery with the kit?
No, the solar kit will work with standard golf cart batteries. However, we do recommend buying new batteries when you buy your kit if your current batteries are more than 9 months old. Batteries aged more than that will typically take longer to charge because of the sulfation caused by being fully depleted and fully recharged, over and over by conventional chargers. Solar Power keeps batteries in the upper load level, which makes them age much slower – typically solar doubles the life of your batteries.
10) How long will the battery stay charged if my cart is not used?
If you’re going on vacation or to a seasonal home, just disconnect your battery’s cables to ensure power doesn’t leak while you’re away. First disconnect the “plus” and then the “minus.” When you return, reconnect the cables in the reverse order.
If you prefer to leave your battery connected, it may lose some power while you are away. However, parking your cart outside in the light should fully recharge the batteries.
11) Does installing a solar conversation kit violate the warranty on my cart or its batteries?
No, because our kit is fully removable, leaves no trace, and does not cause any permanent changes to the operating system of your cart. If you’ve been away for a long period with the batteries connected, you may want to plug your cart in for one to two hours.
12) Why does Gulf City Solar’s product work so well with golf carts, while others (glass & other thinfilm products) do not?
The secret lies in our proprietary power management, which works about 30% more efficiently than others. Enough difference between NOT having to charge overnight, or having to do it every night.
